Hehe, this time's preview picture is especially funny. Goodbye, Shiharu's bun! There is an even better picture on the page after this, where Matsuanga-san looks super sexy and a bit Sadistic, but because the shape of the panel was weird, I couldn't use it for a preview.
Chapter 48 is the story of Shiharu's first day back after being gone for 3 days on her school trip to Hokkaido. It technically starts out, however, the night before Shiharu returns to work. Akane has just gotten out of the bath and is complaining that she misses Shiharu while Matsunaga-san tries to dry her hair. While he’s busy towel-drying Akane’s hair, Aoi takes the opportunity to run away in only his diaper, dripping water all over the floor, because he’s afraid of the noise the hair drier makes. Matsunaga-san chases after him and forces him to sit and have his hair dried so he won’t catch a cold, but when he finally finishes, he returns to Akane and finds her already asleep on the futon. He towel dries her hair as best he can, but ultimately gives up and lays down to sleep next to the twins, totally exhausted from juggling work and child-raising. Sometime during the night, Akane-chan rolled out from under the covers, and as a result wakes up in the morning with a cold/fever. When Shiharu arrives, Aoi-kun is the only one who rushes to greet her, and a zombie-like Matsunaga-san explains to her how Akane-chan caught a cold. At first, Shiharu offers to try to get out of work at the daycare, but Matsunaga-san tells her that he is free in the morning and can bring Akane to the doctore, and in the afternoon Takeru’s mom, Miyagawa-san, can stay with her until 5pm, so it’s decided Shiharu will take Aoi-kun to the daycare with her, and come back at 5pm and watch both the twins until gets out of work at 7pm. He rushes Shiharu and Aoi out the door, explaining Akane-chan will raise a fuss if she sees Shiharu. At the daycare, Shiharu and the teacher chat about how hard working parents have it when their kids get sick. The parent’s natural reaction is to want to stay home and care for the child, but they can’t miss work. However, if they bring the sick child to daycare, all the other kids will get sick as well, so they also can’t do that. In a manner resembling a public-service advertisement, there is a banner across the panel that claims there is a service called “sick day daycare” to deal with this situation. Who knew? A girl from the daycare asks Shiharu where Akane-chan is, and Kento-kun (Akane’s “boyfriend”) asks Aoi-kun where Akane-chan is, and both are told that she is sick. Akane-chan is really loved by everyone at the daycare, huh? After school, Shiharu gets an email from Matsunaga-san saying that the doctor told him Akane-chan only had a normal cold, and that with rest and medication she’ll be fine. He also reports that Akane’s fever has gone down. As Shiharu and Aoi depart from daycare, Shiharu suggests stopping to buy something for Akane-chan that will make her feel even better, and asks Aoi-kun what he thinks Akane will like. He suggests Apple Juice, and so they decided to stop and buy whole apples, which they’ll grate to make a puree snack (apple sauce?). As they walk, Shiharu thinks to herself that it’s sad for the two of them to have to be separated, but she also treasures being able to spend time alone with one of them. Aoi-kun is suuuuper cute when he shyly asks Shiharu for a “huggie” and she gladly gives him one. Once the two of them arrive home, Shiharu meets Takeru’s mom in person for the first time. As they are introducing themselves, Akane wobbles in and gives Shiharu a heartfelt welcome-home greeting. Miyagawa-san tells Shiharu she wrote a list of all the food Akane ate that day, as well as when she took her medicine. She also remarks that since Shiharu has been with them, Akane and Aoi have made a lot of progress towards getting over their shyness/fear of strangers. She also says that the twins had a really hard time after Kou-chan first left, and Shiharu is a bit mystified, since this is the first time she has learned of the twins’ father’s name. After Miyagawa-san leaves, Shiharu wonders to herself what kind of person “Kou-chan” is. Shiharu then reads over the memo that Miyagawa-san left, and is horrified to discover that Akane-chan only ate half a bowl of rice porridge, since her normal appetite usually leaves her asking for 2nds after eating an entire bowl of rice. Shiharu asks Akane-chan if there’s anything she’d like to eat or drink, and Akane answers of her own accord that she wants apple juice. Shiharu is really impressed that Aoi-kun seemed to know “telepathically” what Akane-chan wanted, but when she mentions it to him, he just says “Apple juice is yummy.” Lol. Aoi-kun helps Shiharu grate the apples, and then she gives him the socks she bought him in Hokkaido as a souvenir. Aoi-kun insists on putting the socks on immediately, and further insists that he will put them on himself! He spends 15 minutes struggling to get them on, but in the end succeeds, and Shiharu hugs him while crying with pride. She then brings Akane her grated apple juice, and after feeding it to her, Shiharu gives Akane-chan her souvenir as well. She expects Akane to insist on putting the socks on herself, like Aoi-kun did, but instead Akane hands Shiharu her foot, so that Shiharu can put it on for her. Shiharu is amused that in this area of development as well, the twins are each making progress at their own speed. Matsunaga-san arrives home, and Shiharu tells him that she’d just taken Akane’s temperature and it’s back to normal, and shows him the memo Miyagawa-san made. He tells her that he’s relieved, because while they were at the pediatrician, there were so many sick kids there that he felt sure Akane would get sicker, not better, from being there. Akane energetically shows off her new socks, which reassures Matsunaga-san that she is feeling better. Shiharu offers to go make tea, and is shocked to find Matsuanga-san leaning over her shoulder staring at her. He explains that her tea is the best, and he wants to see how she makes it. Shiharu tries to explain, but she’s really nervous from being watched so closely, and Matsunaga-san is standing ve—ry close to her while watching, so she ends up stuttering adorably. Just then, she remembers the souvenir she bough for Matsunaga-san, and snatches upon the opportunity to run away and go get it. She gives him the package, and when he opens it, it’s revealed that the handkerchief has a picture of Hokkaido on it. Shiharu is a bit self-conscious for deciding on this one on a whim, but he assures her that he likes it and will use it. On the last page of the chapter, Shiharu is smiling shyly from this praise, and when she puts Akane-chan to sleep the boys stare on jealously, especially Aoi-kun.
